Idle Thoughts #05

Idle Thoughts 05

We were hoping to get two cartoons done per week, but failed to do so last week πŸ™‚ But hopefully, this week we can keep up to the schedule…

The basic idea for this one came out of a Facebook video about Tai-Chi, if I remember correctly. Some guy promoting Tai-Chi was saying that you could get a body like his coach and the rest … well, the rest is in the cartoon πŸ˜›

Idle Thoughts 04

We decided we were going to try and do maybe two cartoons a week β€” trying to do a cartoon every day was just getting to be too much work. Plus, if we’re doing cartoons every day, then we don’t have time to watch YouTube videos. And without YouTube videos, where’d we get our ideas from? πŸ˜›

This particular incident didn’t actually happen πŸ˜€ We did watch a YouTube video where a guy went up to a cassava stand and ask them what kind of spices they used, but the rest is just pure imagination.…

Idle Thoughts #03

Idle Thoughts 03

So, we’re still doing the cartoon πŸ™‚ But we probably have to go to two cartoons a week? Or maybe three? Might be easier to manage that way…

But anyway, here’s the story about this one.

We actually saw somebody say this in yet another YouTube travel video. I can see the confusion – hoppers sounds like opus and if you’ve never heard the term, I can see how “opus” might make better sense than “hoppers”, which just sounds as if you’re talking about rabbits πŸ˜›…

Idle Thoughts #02

So we decided that if we are going to do cartoons, we might as well start learning how to draw better. My wife, as you’ll notice from the cartoons, is benefitting from the lessons β€” me, not so much πŸ˜› But I did pick up a few pointers on how to draw better, so I guess we’ll see if there’s any improvement as time progresses … if I manage to keep this up that is πŸ™‚

Anyway, today’s topic is something that we’ve tackled before β€” we just see so many people doing YouTube travel videos struggle with how to pronounce Galle.…

Idle Thoughts 01

As I might have mentioned elsewhere, I want to learn to draw. I’m not very good at it πŸ˜›

The wife is much better at art, but she feels that she needs to improve on her drawing/sketching. So we have been trying a few different drawing courses online. But most of them didn’t appeal to us that much.…

#10 – Fragility

Erosion by Michael Whelan (https://www.michaelwhelan.com/galleries/erosion/)

Michael Whelan has a whole series of paintings called “The End of Nature” in his galleries. These are some of my most favourite paintings of his β€” partly because I love the green landscapes he paints and partly because I think humanity is a blight upon this world and think that we’ll continue to destroy all that’s beautiful and pure on the planet till it’s too late.…

#9 – New Worlds

2061 by Michael Whelan (https://www.michaelwhelan.com/galleries/2061-odyssey-three/)

I distinctly remember being very excited to read Arthur C. Clarke’s “2001: A Space Odyssey” and I also remember that I didn’t read it in English β€” I read a Sinhalese translation. But I also remember purchasing “2010: Odyssey Two” as an English book, and the amazing cover for it.

At that time, I didn’t know that the cover was drawn by Michael Whelan.…

#8 – Darkness

Arise by Michael Whelan (https://www.michaelwhelan.com/galleries/arise/)

I don’t think I’ve seen this particular painting by Michael Whelan before. But when I did come across it, it spoke to me πŸ™‚

I think almost as soon as I looked at the painting, I got the first two lines of the poem β€” my wife and I have this running joke based on the title of a short story by Harlan Ellison, “I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream“.…

Covering Art

Bat Out of Hell album cover art by Richard Corben

When I posted about my blog post about book covers and cover artists, Of Covers and Books, my friend Nalin, whom I’ve known since grade 6, commented about his love of the art of Boris Vallejo. (Nalin is the only other person I know of from that far back, apart from me, who still has the same love of science fiction that we had back then πŸ™‚)

I had totally forgotten Boris Vallejo till Nalin reminded me, but I do remember being fascinated with the art of both Vallejo and Luis Royo.…

#7 – Icarus

L’Echelle by Michael Whelan (https://www.michaelwhelan.com/galleries/lechelle/)

I am not familiar with this painting by Michael Whelan β€” in fact, I’m pretty certain I’d never seen it before I came across it randomly a couple of weeks ago when browsing his galleries πŸ™‚

For some reason, the art called out to me and I thought I needed to write a poem about it.…
